Feline Dental Care - Why Brush Your Cat's Teeth?

Dentistry is wide indeed and for this reason, it's important to note that there is actually more to being a cat owner than just feeding and playing with him or her. The responsibility of taking care of the cat's dental needs also comes in handy. It's however interesting to know that a cat's dental care is quite similar to that of human beings.

Food and plaque usually builds up on the cat's teeth and if allowed to stay for longer, it begins to eat away at the cat's teeth which may lead to tooth decay, lost teeth, gum disease and other oral infections. All of these are extremely harmful to the cat's health and may end up affecting the ability to eat properly, which may bring more health complications.

These are some of the conditions that can be easily avoided by providing general cat care. While a cat is taken to a veterinarian for dental care, he is usually placed under anesthesia so that the teeth may be cleaned and scrutinized for any possible infections. The cost of this exercise usually does not too high unless has indeed neglected the cat's dental care for too long. Such cases will always require more extensive dental care that might come with extra cost.

One can actually brush the cat's teeth at home, something that should be done on a regular basis. One should however talk to the veterinarian for suggestions and instructions, which should be followed to the letter. There are small tooth brushes that can be purchased from a local pet supplies store as well as a tooth paste that is specially designed for feline dental care.

The procedure might not be pleasant to cat for the first time but he definitely gets used to with time. If one is not comfortable with giving the cat the necessary dental care at home, it is always advisable to seek the services of a veterinarian. Add to Technorati Favorites Bookmark and Share
